By Benoit Collin

Last updated: 2024-12-05

Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult
Length: ~6km
Completion time: 3h
Route Type: Point-to-Point

Details

  • Starting Point: This trail is an alternative to the Blue Trail section between Manarola and Corniglia which is currently closed. From Manarola, expect a steep ascent, with around 1200 steps. Starting from Corniglia makes the climb much smoother although you will have to climb the stairs from the train station to the town center. Alternatively, you can take a bus from Manarola to Volastra to skip this section of the trail.
  • Along the Way: The route passes through olive groves and vineyards, offering panoramic vistas of the sea and the terraced hillsides. From Volastra the path is slightly going down to Corniglia.
  • End Point: The trail concludes in Corniglia, the only Cinque Terre village not directly on the sea. Once arrived, you have the following options:
    1. Hike back to Manarola or connect it to Blue Trail section between Corniglia and Vernazza
    2. Climb down the stairs and take the Cinque Terre train back to Manarola or any of the villages

Practical Tips

  • Alternative to the Blue Trail: This itinerary is an excellent alternative to the more crowded Blue Trail. Note that this trail is more challenging than the coastal route, with steep climbs and descents.
  • Wear Appropriate Footwear: the trail can be rocky and uneven, making good hiking shoes essential for a safe hike.
  • Water and Snacks: There are few opportunities to refill or purchase provisions along the way, especially between Volastra and Corniglia.
  • Sun Protection: The trail offers limited shade. Wear a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses to protect yourself from sunburn and heatstroke.
  • Start early: Beginning your hike early will help avoid the midday sun and heat, particularly during the summer months.
