An essential guide to Vernazza

Vernazza is arguably the most picturesque of the Cinque Terre villages. Its steep, winding streets lead to a charming harbor, perfect for people-watching and boat-gazing.

What to see and do

The Piazza Marconi, lined with cafes and gelato shops, is where you’ll find the action. Grab a table at one of the cafes, order an espresso or a spritz, and soak up the vibrant atmosphere.

Right by the water's edge, you'll find the church of Santa Maria di Antiochia, an example of Ligurian Gothic architecture with its distinctive octagonal bell tower. Adjacent to the church is a tiny sandy beach and some rocks where locals and tourists alike sunbathe.

Vernazza also features the ruins of Castello Doria, a castle with a circular tower once used to lookout for pirates. You can access it by heading up the steep staircase near the harbor and you will be rewarded with super views over Vernazza. Entrance costs €2 per person and is cash only.

For an unforgettable view, follow the hiking trail towards Monterosso; many hikers pause along the way to capture Vernazza’s vibrant colors from a distance. The beginning of the second Blue trail section leading to Corniglia offers equally stunning views.

Like others village in Cinque Terre, it can feel like everyone and their cousin has decided to visit during peak season and the narrow streets can become overcrowded. Visit early in the morning or later in the evening for a slightly less crowded experience. For a peaceful retreat, visit the Santuario di Nostra Signora di Reggio, a Romanesque church nestled in the hills about an hour from Vernazza. The scenic path to the sanctuary winds through vineyards and olive groves.
