Riomaggiore is the southern gateway to Cinque Terre and arguably its most charmingly rustic village.
What to see and do
At the heart of Riomaggiore's historical offerings is the Riomaggiore Castle. Built in the 13th century as a lookout and defense mechanism against pirates, today it offers panoramic views that are worth the climb.
Its charming harbor, filled with colorful boats and surrounded by pastel-hued houses, is the perfect spot for sunbathing and swimming. The wave breaker directly in front of the harbor is a favourite among photographers, especially at sunset. If you keep walking alongside the coast towards Punta di Montenero (the southern end of the Cinque Terre), you will end on the rather uncomfortable pebble beach Spiaggia di Riomaggiore.
Closed since 2012 following a landslide, Via dell'Amore (The Path of Love), the famous trail linking Riomaggiore with Manarola, reopened to the public in August 2024 and can be accessed by purchasing a Cinque Terre Card with an additional 10€ fee. For those seeking an alternative route, Via Beccara offers an inland path to Manarola.
For the more adventurous, the hike to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Montenero is a must-do and offers some of the most stunning views of the Cinque Terre coast. The hike is relatively easy and should not take more than 1.5 hours. On your way back, you can stop for a sunset drink at Il Sole a 180 Gradi.
