Details
Starting Point:
The hike typically starts at the Escorca area. This spot is accessible by car and there is parking available. You can also reach it by bus from Sóller (bus 231).
Along the Way:
- Dramatic Gorge: The trail takes you through the stunning Torrent de Pareis gorge, which is a deep and narrow canyon carved by the stream over thousands of years.
- Scrambling and Climbing: Expect to scramble over boulders, climb down steep sections, and navigate through narrow passages. This hike requires good balance and strength.
- Scenic Beauty: You'll be surrounded by towering limestone walls, lush vegetation, and possibly see some wildlife. The acoustics in the gorge are incredible, amplifying the sounds of nature.
- Riverbed: Depending on the season, parts of the hike might involve wading through water or crossing wet sections. The water levels vary, so be prepared for this.
End Point:
The hike ends at the beautiful Sa Calobra beach, where the Torrent de Pareis meets the Mediterranean Sea. From here, you can relax on the beach, explore the small village of Sa Calobra, and take a boat back to Port de Sóller or other destinations on the island. If you parked your car at Escorca, you can hop on the bus 231 at Port de Sóller to get back there.
Practical Tips
- Experience Required: This hike is only recommended for experienced hikers with good physical fitness due to its challenging nature.
- Weather Conditions: Check the weather forecast before setting out. Avoid this hike if there is a chance of rain, as the gorge can become dangerous with flash floods.
- Footwear and Clothing: Wear sturdy hiking boots with good grip. Dress in layers and bring waterproof clothing if necessary.
- Water and Food: Carry plenty of water (at least 2 liters per person) and energy-rich snacks or a packed lunch. There are no facilities along the way.
- Navigation: The route is not always clearly marked. Use a detailed map, GPS device, or go with a guide. Ensure you know the route before starting. There is no mobile phone reception in the canyon.
- Timing: Start early in the morning to allow plenty of daylight to complete the hike. It can take longer than expected due to the challenging terrain and you want to be able to catch the last bus back to Escorca if you are parked there
- Safety: Consider going with a group or guide if you are not familiar with the route. Inform someone about your plans and expected return time.
